Do Something is a new not-for-profit organisation established by Planet Ark founders Jon Dee and Pat Cash in association with Tina Jackson, former Executive Director of the National Trust of Australia (NSW), to create positive social and environmental change. Save Food Stop Waste is one of its inaugural campaigns.
With household budgets and petrol prices spiralling out of control, it’s surprising just how much food we waste. Analysis of the latest figures indicates that Australians are throwing out three million tonnes of food every year. That’s $5 billion worth of food. Our joint aim is to save the environment and your wallet at the same time.
Some experts believe that we’re throwing away at least 20% of the food we buy, the equivalent of buying five bags of groceries and throwing one away. Given the cost of today’s food, this is clearly not sustainable for the family budget. Neither is it sustainable for the environment.
When food waste rots in landfill it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 23 times more potent than the CO2 from your car’s exhaust.
When we throw away food, we also waste all of the resources, fuel and energy that were used to get that food from the paddock to our plate. Australians throw away food because we forget about it. We leave it lingering in the depths of our fridges and cupboards. When we do use it, we use too much and even then we don’t use the leftovers. It’s far easier to throw out food and buy more.
For decades Tupperware products have been used to stop food waste. That’s why Do Something was so keen to join with Tupperware to launch the Save Food Stop Waste initiative. It’s not just about caring about food and saving money. It’s about creating a sustainable future for our kids.
